Trans Kalahari Highway Travel Tips and Accommodation in Lobatse, Jwaneng and Ghanzi.

If you’re travelling up to Maun or Namibia from Johannesburg via the Trans Kalahari Highway, you will find the road pretty unexciting, mostly bush and road, sprawling landscapes and uncluttered destinations and of course, wide African skies.

The Trans Kalahari Highway itself is a good road and you can travel up to 120kms an hour, although you will have to stop frequently to avoid cattle and donkeys wandering around on the road, which makes travel along this road at night especially unsafe. Don’t do it! Rather stop overnight and continue the next day.

In addition to cattle and donkeys, we’ve come across owls, goshawks and vultures that are often road kill victims, so be careful and be vigilant in slowing down.

Also, you will have to slow down considerably due to small villages along the way, so watch out for 60km, 80km signs along the way. The Botswana traffic officials are on the ball when it comes to speeding and you will often see them along the sides of the roads, waiting to catch their victims.

Are Botswana traffic officials corrupt? No, they’re not (generally) but they will enforce the law and there’s no use fighting or arguing with them. Pay up if you’ve broken speeding laws and be careful to obey the limits and you will be fine.
