Dark Sky Locations – Southern Africa’s Amazing Star Gazing Tourism Sites

Light pollution is a way of life in cities around the world. A dark sky location, or a star-studded sky is becoming somewhat of a rarity these days.

This site is called Beneath African Skies, and the skies in this part of the world, on this continent, both during the day and at night are nothing less than spectacular. These skies can be seen in the rural areas of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, to mention just a few African countries.

Astro Tourism is becoming very popular. According to the International Dark Sky Association, “The natural night sky is our common and universal heritage, yet it’s rapidly becoming unknown to the newest generations.” Indeed, how many kids these days go out and watch the phases of the moon, regularly admire a stunning sunset, or are even aware of the magnificent constellations right above them?

The dry climates of Sub-Saharan African regions boast vast tracts of wilderness, desert and a sparse population. There are no gigantic billboards, neon lights and glaring street lights in many of the desert and semi-desert areas and protected wildlife habitats.

There is a Dark Sky Reserve in Namibia, the first in Africa, advertised on the International Dark Sky Association as a location where one can can see spectacular stars. It seldom rains in the Sossusvlei, Namibia there is a small population and no humidity, so here, one is practically guaranteed a clear night with unbelievably bright stars. Expect to see the constellations of the southern skies in all their glory. More Dark Sky Reserves are planned for the future, for example in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa.

Other destinations include the Northern Cape in South Africa, sleep outs can be arranged in the Eastern Cape and of course there are spectacular sights to be seen in the wilderness areas in Botswana.
